Message from the Head of School
College Awaits The Class of 2010...What A Year We've Had!
With the end of school only one week away, I am eagerly anticipating our High School graduation ceremony on June 6, 2010, followed by the ribbon cutting for the new home of the High School at DKJA. At this momentous event, the school community will honor Linda R. Kaminow, who came forward as President of the Rosenblatt Foundation to arrange for the largest gift in DKJA’s recent history. The extensive renovation project would not have been possible without the generosity of Ms. Kaminow. I am thrilled that we reached this milestone, and that our FIRST graduates to have attended classes in the new building will proudly march across the stage of Zinman Hall to accept their diplomas.
Strength – KOACH – we’ve stood together, united, to reach this very moment!
We are proud to announce that the Class of 2010, though small in number, can boast such accomplishments as having among its ranks students who achieved designations as National Merit Scholars, of receiving over $1.1 million in academic scholarships, and having been accepted to more than 30 schools including Georgia Tech University, Tufts University, and Honors Colleges at the University of Florida, Boston University, the University of Miami, Washington University, and New York University. Mazel Tov!
On Wednesday of this week, the DKJA Board of Trustees and Administration welcomed staff, faculty, and the school community to the DKJA 2010 Annual Meeting in Zinman Hall.
The events of the 2009-2010 academic year were recounted, the Board for the 2010-2011 year was installed, tributes were made in honor of esteemed outgoing Board President Michael Beckerman, and next year’s President, Lesley Zafran, was installed for another term amidst accolades and expressions of gratitude for her tireless efforts on behalf of DKJA. Appreciation for her magnanimous generosity was once again bestowed upon Benefactor Linda R. Kaminow, as well as the many members of the DKJA family that have enabled us to "...Go From Strength to Strength."

DKJA Technology Dept. Hosts FISTA Meeting

DKJA proudly hosted the monthly FISTA (FLORIDA INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS TECHNOLOGY ASSOCIATION) meeting.
FISTA is a successful association that was founded over 10 years ago. The purpose of these monthly user-group meetings of technology professionals from independent schools in Broward and Palm Beach Counties is to share technology resources, ideas, and best practices. Each year, a theme is agreed upon by majority vote of the group. This year’s theme was for the host school to showcase successful practices of classroom technology integration. Special thanks to Mr. Amer Randell and Mrs. Holley Stabler for presenting wonderful overviews of Web 2.0 tools that they have used throughout the year. Their presentations were well-received, and both teachers were complimented by the attendees from the other schools.
Lower School Highlights
Musical Learning & Fun!
First-graders (who were former K-111 students) came back for a visit, accompanied by Orchestra Director Mr. Gustavo Correa. The visit introduced students to the DKJA String Orchestra Program that first-graders have the opportunity to participate in, and the students loved it! After listening to a short performance, each kindergarten student had an opportunity to play the violin.
In music class with Mrs. Mart, students presented a talent show! In Hebrew, kindergartners decorated hats and participated in a "baseball round-up." What a week!
Tzedakah Committee Shines!
It a mitzvah to give Tzdakah and to help people in need. The Tzedakah Committe's goal at DKJA is to help students learn about responsibility, Tikkun Olam, and charity.
Each representative recently informed their classmates of the various projects they embarked upon, and described how helped collect food items for the food pantry and toys for JAFCO Chanukah, and prepared care packages and toiletries for the needy people in our community, among other endeavors.
Kol Hakavod!
Middle School Highlights
One remarkable DKJA student, Jensen Butters (shown in the far right corner), created a memorable and collaborative work to showcase the efforts of EVERY sixth-grader at DKJA. She did so by incorporating the flags she and her fellow students created for the annual Israel for Real Expo into an amazing artistic masterpiece. The Israel for Real flags were so beautifully crafted that a request was made for the students to please donate them back to the sixth grade for posterity. That's when Jensen offered to sew them together into an oversized quilt, which will be on display in the Middle School for all to see. Thank you, Jensen, for your innovative creativity!
High School Highlights
This has been a very busy week in the High School. On Wednesday, the High School Dance Team and Handbell Choir performed at the Middle School/High School “Morning of Music.” The event was emceed by Thespian Club members Brett Kaplan and Aliza Bresnick. On Thursday evening, the Mock Trial team put on an exhibition of the skills they have learned while working with Mr. Aaron Cohen over the past semester. With the help of Mr. Gregory Schiller (Counsel at the Office of the State Attorney) and the Hon. Judge Charles E. Burton (Florida's 15th Judical Circuit and a former DKJA parent), students were able to experience a trial in a courtroom in Delray Beach. Students assumed the roles of prosecutors, defense attorneys, witnesses, and defendant as they presented the case of “State of Florida vs. Haley Brunetti.” The prosecution, consisting of Simon Fuchs and Torey Korsunsky, did a masterful job with a weak case, but the defense, represented by Brett Kaplan and Noah Wolman, were victorious. Zack Herbert, Michael Kandel, and Itamar Ben-Avi fulfilled the roles of witnesses and defendant. Faculty members, students, and guests filled in as jurors. There was a packed courtroom of spectators, and all were impressed with the professional way our students carried themselves. This has been a great learning opportunity and experience for our students.

Become A Host Family...Make A Difference
Make a difference in the life of one student! You can do so by sharing your heart, your home, and
your country with a young person from abroad by becoming a host family through the PAX (Program of Academic Exchange) organization.
Families need only provide a place for the student to sleep and study, meals, and a warm, supportive environment. Families will be matched with students through the PAX. Students are matched according to your family’s interests such as music, sports, cooking, martial arts, tennis, etc…
During the ten month experience, each PAX student comes to know dozens of Americans – classmates, teachers, community members – who have a chance to learn about another culture and to look at their own world through the eyes of an outsider. Returning home, the PAX student takes with him/her friendships that will last a lifetime and a new understanding of what it means to be an American.
PAX Community Coordinator Jeanne Monte is currently interviewing area families in Palm Beach and Broward Counties. She is available to meet with you to show you the profiles of students arriving in August. For more information call her at (561) 883-2783 or dreamandgrow@gmail.com or the National Office at 1-800-555-6211, www.pax.org.
